Walk details for 14 June 2026
All walks start from Whitby Abbey Car Park and finish at the Car Park in town, by the river. The toilet stop will be a Robin Hood's Bay (as the toilets are free) but there are also toilets at the Abbey and in Whitby - 50p.
Coach will be parked in Long Stay P on Langborne Road and will leave at 4pm.
Short Walks
Extra Short 4.4 miles 7 km. 240 ft. 74 m of ascent
Leave the car park by the vehicle entrance, left along raised walkway. The just after the Whitby Brewery cross the road and join Cleveland Way heading south. until you reach the holiday park site. Go thro' the site past their reception building and exit the site on the tarmac access road which leads you out onto Hawkser Lane where you turn right. Approx 350 yards down Hawkser Lane you reach overhead lines where a path on the left leads into habitation. Wind you way down to the river and then onto Tate Hill Pier (where the Russian ship, Demeter, came aground in Bram Stoker's novel Dracula). From here return to Whitby Bridge then climb up to the Dracula Memorial Bench for a great view over the town and Abbey.. Return to the river and the coach is in the Coach Park along past the Black Pearl.
Short 6 miles 9.6 km. 577 ft. 176 m of ascent
Route follows Extra Short up up holiday park where you continue on Cleveland Way near the exit to the holiday park. Then follow coastal path to just short of the lighthouse then strike up towards Ling Hill Farm and Brook House before joining Hawsker Lane where you turn right and follow the route of the Extra Short walk into Whitby
Long Walk
Long 12.8 miles 20.6 km. 1243 ft. 379 m of ascent
Again this route follows the same start as the other three but upon reaching the Cleveland Way Coastal path continues all the way down to Robin Hood's Bay.
Upon reaching the sign saying Robin Hood's Bay 1/2 mile turn right. After about 25 yards there is a left turn (by National Trust sign for Rocket Post Field) Down this path for about 40 yards, turn sharp right and you are on the Cinder Track heading for Whitby.
After crossing the bridge over River Esk stay on Cinder track until you reach the National Cycle Network marker where you bear left following Cycle Route 1. At Beevers & Co. turn right then cross the main road at the roundabout and walk down Bagdale. Past the bus station and train station and at the next roundabout the coach will be parked in the Long Stay P at end of Langborne Road.
Medium Walk
Medium 10 miles 16 km. 1046 ft. 319 m of ascent
Following same start as Short walks but once onto the Cleveland Way follow the coastal path for 7 km. Pass both the Whitby Fog Signal and Lighthouse and once you reach Rain Dale turn right up a short steep path to join the Cinder Track which you follow back to Whitby.
Just after crossing the bridge high above the River Esk take the turning to the right between the sports fields and follow the path out of the school grounds down to the main road (A171)
This can be crossed by turning right and using an underpass down towards the river.
You are now running parallel with the railway. Just before the STOP sign cross the railway, turn left and the coach park is directly in front of you.
At a couple of places along the Cinder Track there are Honesty Stalls selling cake,, flap-jacks, drinks etc so make sure you have some coinage as at least one of them is selling for charity. (the flap-jacks are yummy!!)
