Filey to Scarborough
Organised by Ian Bennett
Sunday August 12th 2018
OS MAP: Explorer 301
All walks are linear starting from Filey area walking to Scarborough.
Extra-short walk 6.5 miles
The bus will drop off at the entrance to Crow Park Caravan and Camping Site.
On entering the park follow the direction given to the left ( Camping site ) and in half a mile you will reach the coastal path. Filey to the right is 3 miles, Scarborough to the left is 6 miles.
See short walk for further details.
Short Walk 9.5 miles (walk leader)
The drop off point will be at the top of Filey Brigg. We will have the opportunity to walk down on to the spit if we wish to do so before commencing our journey to Scarborough.
This is a relatively straight forward walk along the Cleveland Way with magnificent coastline views both in front and to the rear.
The cliff top path has minor undulations and whilst on occasion you have to look where to put your feet in general the conditions are good.
The walk takes us along by Club Point and Under Nine Rocks to Gristhorpe Cliff where the extra short walkers cross our path as they come out from the Crows Nest Caravan & Camping Site, 3 miles into our journey to Scarborough. From here we can see Castle Rocks, we pass Red Cliff Point and Cayton Bay.
Coming inland for a while due to erosion near Cayton Cliff. Look out for a sharp right turn down a narrow path which takes us back down to the sea front. This is signposted Cleveland Way which we continue to follow into Scarborough.
Walk along part of the promenade passing Scarborough Spa reaching the roundabout below the Grand Hotel.
The railway station and Wetherspoon’s can be found a little way to the rear of the Grand Hotel.
Medium Walk 12.5 miles (walk leader Ian Bennett)
From our drop off point we follow the access road towards Muston Grange Caravan & Camping Site which we pass on our left. We then pass the golf course before we emerge on the cliff top overlooking the very southern end of Filey promenade.
Dropping down to the promenade via a stepped path we then walk along the entire length of the sea front and out to the spit on Filey Brigg
Weather permitting it is the intention to have our break on the rocks, part way out on the spit. We could spend some additional time here on this interesting feature and if we are really lucky we may be able to get up “ Close and personal “ with the odd seal.
We will return to the cliff top by means of a path at side of the Brigg. This is a short sharp climb.

Long Walk 15 miles (walk leader) tbc
The start point for this walk is at Stockendale Farm where the Wolds Way crosses the Hunmanby Road.
The first section of the walk from Stockendale Farm takes us along the Wolds Way and after about half a mile we have our first view of the coastline in the distance. Shortly after this we take a right turn through the hedgerow and walk through a wheat field in the direction of Muston. As we approach Muston we can see the cliffs in the direction of Miles Haven and Hunmanby Sands.
We walk through Muston and the Wolds Way then takes us along a roadside path for a half a mile or so before we turn off heading up towards Muston Grange Caravan & Camping Site ( Start point for medium walk ).
Further information:
There will be a toilet stop at the top of Staxton Hill off the B1249 as we approach Filey.
As the drop off points for both the long and medium walks are by the roadside there will be no access to external bus storage areas as we leave the bus.
It is therefore important that all long and medium walkers take the opportunity at the stop at Saxton Hill to make sure that they are “All set” and “Good to go” on arrival at the drop off points.
Short and extra short walkers will have access to external bus storage compartments and toilet facilities at the top of Filey Brigg.
The return pick up point to Pontefract will be outside the Scarborough railway station opposite Wetherspoon’s with a 4.30 pm. depart.
The coach company advises that with traffic, the return journey is likely to be around 2 hours which puts us back in Pontefract about 6.30p.m.
