Ramsbottom

West Pennine Moors

All walks are circular starting and finishing at Ramsbottom.

Long Walk 14 miles  (walk leader) 

The drop off point will be in Ramsbottom.

Leaving the town centre we head west through Tanners to Holcombe then south to A676.

Continue northwest past Redisher and Hollingrove Farms onto Simons Farm, Range House to Boardmans Farm.

Head south to Hawkshaw crossing the A676 at the school. continue southeast to Holly Mount then nrtheast to Greenmount Golf Club house.

Head east to Greenmount school, then go south along the railway line to Tottington and southeast to Woodhill.

Return north to Ramsbottom along the Irwell Sculpture Trail.

Medium Walk 11 miles  (walk leader Keith King) 

From our drop off point start as the long walk to Hollingrove Farm, then south to Greenmount Golf club and return as long walk.

Short Walk 7.5 miles  (walk leader) 

Head from Ramsbottom to Greenmount school then go south quarter of a mile along railway track then turn east past Tower Farm to Wood Road. Return along Irwell Sculpture Trail.

Ramsbottom is a market town in the Borough of Bury, Greater Manchester,  Historically in Lancashire, it is on the River Irwell in the West Pennine Moors.

The town name is believed to derive from Old English ramm and botm, meaning "valley of the ram".

The skyline is dominated by the Peel Monument which stands on Holcombe Moor, a memorial to Sir Robert Peel, the 19th century British Prime Minister and creator of the modern British police force. The tower stands 128 feet (39.0 m) tall on Holcombe Moor.

The Irwell Sculpture Trail is the largest public art scheme in England, commissioning regional, national artists. The Trail includes 28 art pieces.

Seek And You Will Find: a series of carved wooden sculptures relating to the indigenous flora found around the park. All the works are 'secretive', located amongst the flora its form is taken from Ramson herb from which the town's name originates.

  • The River: a meandering 90 yards (82 m) path ending in a platform to watch passing trains. The sculpture contains work created by local people - poems celebrating the river and the illustrated story of Jacob's Ladder, a local beauty spot.

  • Tilted Vase (1998) by Edward Allington draws on the legacy of the Industrial Revolution in the valley. Classical in shape reflecting the architecture, built in sections and bolted together to look like a machine.
