  WALK ROUTES

Further information:

Kilburn is probably best known for the White Horse carved into the hillside a short distance away.

Did you know.....

Kilburn is also the home of the Robert Thompson workshop which makes wooden furniture with the distinctive mouse carved somewhere on each piece.

Short Walk:

Leader TBC - 8 miles medium

We first head north along the road which gives us fine views of the White Horse.

We climb up to the carving on a forest track where the view to the south extends for many miles and on a clear day you can see York Minster and Ferrybridge Power Station.

We then carry on north along the Cleveland Way to the

Sutton Bank visitor centre for a comfort and drinks break.

We then carry on the same path for a short distance before dropping down a forest path to Gormire Lake

We walk round the south side of the lake and then head south on farmland passing Kennycow and Hood Grange Farm.

Still heading south we pass through Hood Hill Plantation and turn right over a stile passing Acre House before joining the road back into Kilburn.

Medium Walk:

Leader Geoff Wardle  - 10.6 miles moderate

Leave Kilburn in an easterly direction through the churchyard and then through High Kilburn. Still in an easterly direction through fields and meadows we pass Oldstead to reach

Byland Abbey   where the remains of a large Cistercian Abbey can be seen at the side of road.

Heading NE and then turning to the NW at Wass we climb up through forests and fields to Cam Farm. Heading now to the west we drop into Cockerdale then head north passing Scotch Corner and the John Bunting Memorial Chapel

A short stretch of road walking brings us to the Sutton Bank visitor centre for a comfort break. From here we walk south along the Cleveland Way to the top of the White Horse and then drop down through the forest and by road into Kilburn.

Depending upon the time and weather conditions an alternative route back to Kilburn from the Sutton Bank Visitor Centre will be offered using the route passing Gormire Lake described for the short walk. This will add approximately 1.5 miles to the walk.
